Prepare now if rates rise again

Another cash rate increase isn’t guaranteed – but with the RBA’s next decision due on 29 September, borrowers can take steps now to make sure they’re prepared.

The Reserve Bank has already lifted the cash rate by a combined 0.75 percentage points in 2026, with the current cash rate sitting at 4.35%.

While rates were left unchanged at the most recent meeting, the RBA has made it clear that inflation remains too high and it will respond if needed.

What can borrowers do now?

Rather than trying to predict what the RBA will do next, it can be more useful to focus on the things you can control.

Some options include:

  • Stress-test your budget using a higher home loan repayment.
  • Build or maintain an appropriate cash buffer.
  • Check whether your current home loan rate is still competitive.
  • Use your offset account effectively, if you have one.
  • Review discretionary spending before higher repayments potentially make the decision for you.

If you’re planning to buy, it can also be worth looking at repayments above today’s rate when deciding what you can comfortably afford.

Rates may or may not rise again, but there’s no need to wait for the next RBA decision to review your position.
